‘Barkers’ has one of Britain’s widest ranges of footwear for walkers, trekkers and mountaineers.

We offer a unique fitting service stocking a massive selection of boots and walking shoes in full and half sizes from 3 to 16 - and to fit narrow, wide, long, short or just plain difficult feet. Our priority is to ensure that you feel happy with your footwear, even if it does take an hour or two.

‘…with many thanks for your time, patience and expertise, she of the ‘funny feet’ has became she of the ‘comfortable and blister free feet!’’

Customer - Sue Goddard

A Fitting Solution

Walking boots and shoes need to fit well and provide the right support. To achieve this they need to be fitted correctly.

We inspect your feet by looking at their overall structure and discuss any problems you may have when walking. This allows us to be aware of your particular requirements and concerns. Choice of sock is also very important for the health of your feet and fit of your boot.

Each foot is then measured six different ways to identify its unique characteristics when static and when walking.

Orthotics

We work closely with a Podiatrist and a Physiotherapist who have trained us to identify any problems that may effect the enjoyment of walking.

We may discuss orthotics and are happy to refer you for further expert advice if neccesary.

What Footwear do I need?

Shoes

Shoes are fine for every day use and low level footpaths. Perfect for travelling and sight seeing when all you are after is comfort! We offer a selection of shoes to cater for all weather conditions. However, we are firmly of the opinion that if you are walking on uneven terrain for any period of time then shoes are not the best option.

Lightweight boots

You cannot replace a well fitted boot for support and comfort when out walking. Lightweight boots are usually constructed of fabric and suede. A good fabric and suede boot will always have a waterproof membrane inside or it will let in water. Goretex is the most common membrane but Event, Simpatex etc are also good at doing the job of keeping water out. By their very nature fabric and suede boots are lighter than traditional leather and are best suited to less aggressive terrain.

Leather boots

The boots we stock are made from good quality leather and have different levels of rigidity for either low level walking or trekking. Leather boots can have a waterproof membrane, be leather or fabric lined. Our view is that the different linings have different advantages. With this level of boot ignore the lining and focus on the fit (a comfy foot is a happy foot). If you have different view then tell us so on the blog!!

Alpine/Mountaineering boots

These are boots designed for encounters above the snow line and are constructed to fit crampons (those pointy things that dig into snow and ice….hopefully!!). Modern ‘mountain’ boots are very light and comfortable with the manufacturers constantly competing for the most eye catching colour scheme. It is vital that the boot and crampon work together so be very careful about buying them separately.

Socks

Do not underestimate the importance of getting your sock combination right, it can make a massive difference to the fit of your boots and therefore the comfort of your feet. Hot feet, cold feet, fat feet and thin feet all need to be treated differently.
